Certain study designs are more appropriate than others for answering particular questions. Authors should consider a priori what study designs are likely to provide reliable data with which to address the objectives of their review. Because Cochrane reviews address questions about the effects of health care, they focus primarily on randomized trials.

However, NRS cover designs defined with different labels not consistently applied among researchers. Cohort study design is described as ‘observational’ because, unlike clinical studies, there is no intervention.

Cochrane study designs

Cohort study design is described as ‘observational’ because, unlike clinical studies, there is no intervention. [2] Because exposure is identified before outcome , cohort studies are considered to provide stronger scientific evidence than other observational studies such as case-control studies. [1]

Healthcare outcomes assessed with observational study designs compared with those assessed in randomised trials. Alongside research on the impact of different types of health and social care, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews contains research on the impact of different types of research. Cochrane study designs

Cochrane systematic reviews of interventions are usually focussed primarily on randomised trials in order to reduce the risks of biases that are present in observational study designs, but even so there are still risks of bias that may be present in each trial (see the box below). cluded study, either in databases of ongoing trials or in publica-tions of study designs, or both, and specify the data in the ap-pendix ’Matrix of study endpoints (protocol/trial documents)’. These are adapted primarily from the Cochrane Glossary, with additional material from other sources. 2012-03-01 · Study designs defined by the criteria of the Cochrane Collaboration's Effective Practice and Organisation of Care Group (EPOC) – i.e. randomized controlled trials (RCT), clinical controlled trials (CCT), controlled before-after studies (CBA), and interrupted time series studies (ITS) – are shown in bold font. Search strategies that include a methodological filter focusing on study design of observational studies might be useful for improving the precision of the search performance. Objectives: To assess the sensitivity and precision of a search strategy with a methodological filter to identify observational studies in MEDLINE and Embase.
